Microfinance Through Opportunity International

We support Opportunity International and through them support microfinance loans in India through:

  • Pahal, their microfinance partner. Pahal operates in the districts of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Bihar, Chhattisgarh & Uttar Pradesh.
  • Cashpor, their microfinance partner. Cashpor is based in Varanasi, but also with operations in Bihar.
  • Provide support to KOMIDA in Indonesia which provides education loans to women. In addition to microfinance and education loans KOMIDA offers training to customers on health, gender equality and environment sustainability.
  • Provide microfinance loans in Indonesia through partner organisation TLM. TLM is based in the West Timor / Nusa Tenggara region and provides loans to women to establish business such as farming, kiosks and handicrafts.

Microfinance Through DANA Asia

We support DANA Asia and through them:

  • Microfinance in the Philippines through Grameen Philipinas Microfinance Inc. (GPMI). GPMI combines microfinance with education and mentoring to empower poor people living in the slums of Manila to develop income- producing businesses as a means of alleviating poverty. Micro-loan borrowers receive financial literacy and entrepreneurship training throughout their participation in the loan program and receive ongoing mentorship to support their business’ development.
  • The KJC livestock farm in Siem Reap Cambodia which is poultry farm social business. KJC is designed to upskill low-income Cambodian villagers in best-practice poultry rearing techniques and equips farmers with the resources to launch their own chicken rearing businesses. Farmers are trained in biosecurity, chicken rearing and financial management before being granted a loan to assist in the construction of a shed and purchase their first flock of chicks.

Education

Murrup has the ambition of ensuring that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children have the best education outcomes and optimal opportunities in life. Currently Murrup supports children through various educational programs in four communities.

The Environment

We provide support to DANA Asia and Opportunity International for microfinance loans to farmers to support ecologically sustainable practices. These loans are supplemented with training and education and help the farmers produce multiple crops and handle pests and disease in their crops sustainably. Through DANA we have on-going support towards an eco-brick project in Manila through the establishment of a recycling hub to reduce plastic waste and improve the natural environment in urban poor communities.

The Arts

We support ongoing active engagement with QAGOMA (Qld Art Gallery & Gallery of Modern Art) with the purchase primarily of the art of current developing artists who can benefit by recognised patronage, particularly in Asian countries.

We support an ongoing engagement with the University of Queensland Art Museum in the part time employment of business undergraduates to gain both business (accounting) experience and broaden their life experience with knowledge of the arts and the operational environment.

Other

The Sunrise Cambodia’s orphanage in Kandal Province, Cambodia focuses on Cambodia’s most vulnerable children and the communities in which they live. In addition, the Ashby Utting Art School has been established to encourage the children attending to express themselves through art.
